Matt grew up on a dairy farm and I grew up with hippy granola parents and by looking in our fridge and pantry it was obvious we have taken a few steps in the wrong direction. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to the very thing you are placing in your body for it to function properly. So why is it that when it comes to food we don't know where it comes from and we don't always care? We will simply place items into our mouth and not give a thought to where it came from and what was in it. That's pretty scary. Convenience and cost have replaced quality and a natural product. Right now I am in the stages of re-learning a life of whole food. I hesitate to use the word “organic” not because of it's true definition but because of the growing popularity it is receiving in regards to people using this word to find identity in. This journey is of course in itself a lifestyle change but not something we find our identity in. Here are a few things I have learned so far that I want to share. It is hard to keep this simple because there is so much information out there but I will give it a shot.
Milk Does the Body Good??? Depending on where that milk is coming from. Most dairy farms today are not farms at all but rather dairy industries. These cows are housed in indoor facilities standing in poop, rubbing shoulders with the next sick cow. They are fed corn, antibiotics, and growth hormones to make this large cheap production possible. Many of these cows are calcium deficient because of extreme milk production and are extremely sick on so many levels.
The milk is then pasteurized that in a nutshell destroys and changes it's nutrients and immune enhancing components. The vitamins are virtually destroyed during this process. Then synthetic vitamins are added into the finished product to provide you with that healthy drink we call commercialized milk! Makes you not want to force your kids to drink up.
The grass is greener on the other side of the fence. There are places that do it the old fashion way....the correct way. A place where cows eat grass and production levels are natural. Where the milk has vital nutrients like vitamin A and D. This is found in Raw milk. Raw milk is a nutrient rich whole food. It is so powerful that it is said to be medicinal and life sustaining, meaning you could literally live off of raw milk alone.
I haven't even scratched the surface on this topic and this is already a long post! If you are interested in learning more I will post some websites for you to read through and educate yourself with.
I leave with this thought. When you find out your pregnant you suddenly become consumed with the safety and origin of items placed into your body. You want to make sure it is safe for the baby because you think now what you are putting into your body directly affects something. After having the baby and even after nursing what you are putting in your body still does have a direct affect and it is on you.
